World number 94 Lauren Davis overcame a potential banana skin in beating lucky loser Storm Sanders in straight sets on Friday, backing up a similarly strong display over qualifier Yue Yuan. The 28-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 26th back in 2017 soon after winning her first and inly WTA title to date at the Auckland Open.
PETRA KVITOVA
28th seed Petra Kvitova struggled through a three-set victory over Clara Burel on Friday as she continues to seek out a more consistent level. The former world number two is a two-time Wimbledon champion and six-time Masters champion with a career total of 28 WTA titles to her name. The 32-year-old won her most recent title at the Qatar Open last season.
THE PREDICTION
Kvitova was the winner of the only previous meeting with Davis when she beat the American in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Luxembourg Open way back in 2016. The Czech’s form has been hard to pin down for the best part of a season now but she will be well-backed, even against an American, as a popular legend of the sport and with three sets fairly likely backing her to win at least one of them is the suitably cautious call here.
