World number 70 Laslo Djere is one of the more frustrating players on tour who struggles with consistency but is well capable of the occasional performance like Wednesday’s, where he came back from a set down to stun top seed Casper Ruud. The 27-year-old is at his best on clay but a real scrapper on any surface when everything aligns for him and it would not be a surprise to see him go all the way to the Auckland final now after back-to-back comebacks. 30-year-old Constant Lestienne will be a tough challenge, though, as he also came back from a set down to beat fellow Frenchman Gregoire Barrere. Lestienne looks likely to break the top 60 on tour for the first time no matter the outcome here but the conditions suit him best in Auckland and backing him to earn at least a set is the shrewd call even if Djere ends up coming back again.
