THE PREDICTION
World number 33 Laslo Djere just missed out on a seed at the Australian Open after enjoying some of his best form in recent seasons over the past eight or so months. The 28-year-old reached the the third round at Wimbledon last summer before an excellent run to the final of the Hamburg Open, where he finished runner-up to a resurgent Alexander Zverev on his favoured clay, and a third round exit at the US Open preceded a semi-final exit in Stockholm for form across all surfaces. Djere lost his opening match of 2024 to exciting Chinese up-and-comer Juncheng Shang in three sets in Hong Kong but he looks the solid favourite to bounce back here. World number 122 Arthur Cazaux brings strong form into his Melbourne debut after winning the Noumea Challenger two weeks ago but the Frenchman failed to win all three of his tour-level matches last season. Back Djere to win outright, with four sets about as likely as three.
