By an odd trick of fate, world number 16 Jannik Sinner and number 583 Kyle Edmund will meet for the second time in two weeks in the first round of a tournament after Sinner beat the Brit at this stage of Adelaide 1. 28-year-old Edmund missed almost two years of tennis with a serious injury and several setbacks after surgery but he was offered a protected route into the Australian Open here as a former world number 14 who enjoyed the biggest run of his career in Melbourne back in 2018, stunning the likes of Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov before eventually losing to Marin Cilic in the semi-finals. 21-year-old Sinner should have little trouble beating the Brit, on a very long journey back to as high a level as he can muster, but it will be interesting to see how his game looks here after putting in the performance of his life in the quarter-finals of the US Open in a five-set thriller with eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz – his last major appearance.
