26-year-old Kamil Majchrzak will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 74th after beating the retuning Aljaz Bedene in straight sets on Friday. That was the Pole’s maiden Masters win on his Indian Wells debut, with a defeat to Denis Shapovalov at last season’s Rome Masters his only previous match at this level.
TAYLOR FRITZ
24-year-old Taylor Fritz set a career-high ATP world ranking of 16th at the start of the season after some incredible form late last year started at Indian Wells. The American reached the semi-finals here in October via three brilliant results over Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev before a disappointing defeat to Nikoloz Basilashvili. Since then, Fritz finished runner-up to Maric Cilic at the St. Petersburg Open, beat Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cam Norrie at the ATP Cup and Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets at the Australian Open before taking Stefanos Tsitsipas all the way to a fifth in a round of 16 exit.
THE PREDICTION
Taylor Fritz has suffered a few poor defeats in recent tournaments but that could be expected after reaching the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time and coming so close to beating Stefanos Tsitsipas over five sets. The 24-year-old made a lot of new fans in the desert last season with swashbuckling displays against some of the best players on tour re-earning the support of some Americans who had counted him out over the last few seasons. He will be well-backed against Kamil Majchrzak, who is certainly better than his current world ranking and likely to break the top 50 this season at least. Fritz should be taking this in straight sets but a nervy start is well possible, so take him to win outright for caution’s sake.
