THE LOWDOWN

KAMIL MAJCHRZAK

26-year-old Kamil Majchzak avoided a potential banana skin with an assured straight-sets win over Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. The Pole set a career-high ATP world ranking of 83rd back in 2019 and his progress will have been hampered by the impending covid-19 suspension in 2020 but he looks set to get back there and beyond this season.

ALEX DE MINAUR

22-year-old Alex de Minaur overcame an occasionally brilliant Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday in four sets in front of adoring Aussie fans on Margaret Court Arena. The 32nd seed struggled with covid-19 and the after-effects late last season but he has come out the other side looking back to his best, with a career-best victory over Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup to prove it. De Minaur made the quarter-finals of the US Open back in 2020 before losing to eventual champion Dominic Thiem but his best showing in Melbourne is three two third round exits so far.

THE PREDICTION

Alex de Minaur is regarded by most Australian fans as their best hope for a Grand Slam in this generation, with the infinitely talented Nick Kyrgios the luxury player, and he was backed as such on Tuesday in a high-quality first round win over Lorenzo Musetti. The 22-year-old is likely the fastest man on tour and when he is dialled in and fit it often looks as if he is a doubles team all on his own. With his side of the draw wide open after Casper Ruud pulled out, the Aussie can use the crowd to his advantage until at least the round of 16. He should be able to take this in straight sets but the outright pick is suitably cautious here.
