THE PREDICTION

World number five Elena Rybakina has endured a tough summer since contracting a virus at Roland-Garros and apparent issues with her shoulder may be contributing to her frustrated demeanour on and off the court. The 24-year-old pulled out of the Tokyo Open this week after missing out on a seeding due to the WTA’s new results-based algorithm and she has aired her frustrations about scheduling, for the most part quite rightly, in recent weeks in a correlation with her depreciating results. All this sets up a huge opportunity for Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng to make her debut at the China Open off the back of winning in Gold at the Asian Games on Friday. The 23-year-old recently won her maiden WTA title at the Palermo Ladies Open on clay but she is a handful across surfaces with plenty of room for improvement. Rybakina beat the Chinese in straight sets en-route to the Wimbledon title last summer but back Zheng to earn at least a set here backed by a raucous partisan crowd.
