THE PREDICTION

World number nine Ons Jabeur takes on number 10 Jelena Ostapenko for what should be a thrilling clash on Monday. 2022 Madrid Open champion Jabeur overcame Leylah Fernandez in three tight sets on Saturday to claim back-to-back wins for the first time since picking up her fifth WTA title at the Ningbo Open back in September, suggesting she is finally over the worst of the fitness struggles that have plagued 2024 so far.

26-year-old Ostapenko has enjoyed a much easier route to the round of 16, beating qualifiers Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Maria Carle in straight sets each, but she has also struggled for consistency in recent weeks – winning just six times since picking up her second WTA title of the season at the Linz Open in early February. The pair have faced each other once on each surface to see Jabeur lead 2-1 after claiming their clay encounter in three sets in Stuttgart last spring but Ostapenko has improved significantly since then whilst the Tunisian has laboured. Back Ostapenko to earn at least a set, given Jabeur’s two matches have gone to three so far in Madrid, to leave the victor up to chance.
