Former world number 15 Kaia Kanepi came back from a set down to beat Sara Sorribes Tormo well on Thursday, in keeping with her excellent 2022 form. The 36-year-old Estonian veteran completed a set of Grand Slam quarter-finals earlier this season when she reached the last eight of the Australian Open for a first time with shock wins over Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka. Kanepi owns four WTA titles, although her most recent came almost a decade ago at the 2013 Brussels Open.
ONS JABEUR
World number 10 Ons Jabeur got her Miami Open campaign underway well with a straight sets victory over Magda Linette on Thursday. The 27-year-old won her first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic last summer on grass and she took that form straight into Wimbledon to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for a first time. Jabeur set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh in November of last year but she missed out on becoming the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals by a hair’s breadth and that will again be her goal this season.
THE PREDICTION
This match deserves the drama of the late night atmosphere at the Miami Open. World number 10 Ons Jabeur leads Kaia Kanepi 2-0 in their head-to-head record with two straight-set wins on American hardcourts at Indian Wells back in 2015 and the US Open in 2020 but Kanepi’s form this season suggests this will come a lot closer. Both players will enjoy the raucous support tonight but Jabeur’s game lends itself more to entertainment and that is likely to pull the majority to her cause by the end. Back the Tunisian to win outright, although the wise move inside an accumulator would be for Jabeur to win at least a set.
