THE LOWDOWN

KAIA KANEPI

World number 115 Kaia Kanepi proved to be a Grand Slam giant killer once again as she overcame an out-of-sorts Angelique Kerber in straight sets on Tuesday. Kerber had recently recovered from covid-19 but take nothing away from the occasion for the 36-year-old, who has reached six quarter-finals at major tournaments over the years. With two quarter-finals at each of the other three tournaments, Kanepi can complete the set here in Melbourne with three more wins.

MARIE BOUZKOVA

23-year-old Marie Bouzkova conceded just four games to Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino on Tuesday and she got her doubles campaign underway well alongside Lucie Hradecka as the 10th seeds in that competition. The Czech had never won a match at the Australian Open before and she can set a new Grand Slam record for herself if she reaches the third round.

THE PREDICTION

Kaia Kanepi won the only tour-level meeting between these two and recently too with a three-set victory in the first round of Roland-Garros back in 2020. The Estonian veteran is at her best at the major tournaments, with last year’s victory over reigning champion Sofia Kenin memorable, but this will still be a challenge against Bouzkova with perhaps some of the limelight missing. Considering her 1-0 record against Bouzkova and the quality of her vanquished foe, take Kanepi to win outright here.
