26-year-old Julia Grabher will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 81st after coming back from a set down to beat Tereza Martincova in Auckland. The Swiss enjoyed some success on the ITF circuit last season and she will be targeting a transition into full-time WTA tour tennis in 2023 off the back of a strong first result of the year. World number 40 Leylah Fernandez defended her Guadalajara Open title last season but it was a year of injury setbacks for the Canadian, who impressed in brief stages but could not find the level that saw her produce that stunning run to the US Open final in 2021.
