25-year-old Alexander Zverev set a career-high ATP world ranking of second last June after reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros for the first time but it was a bittersweet achievement after a serious ankle injury saw him retire against eventual champion Rafael Nadal there. The current world number 13 beat Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in the quarter-finals in Paris and he arguably looked the better player against Nadal before his injury but it will be some time before he gets back to those heights with this only his second match back on tour after losing to Taylor Fritz at the United Cup. This is, therefore, a huge opportunity for lucky loser Juan Pablo Varillas, who took Felix Auger-Aliassime to five sets before defeat on his Grand Slam debut at Roland-Garros last year. The Peruvian will never have a better chance at beating a player of Zverev’s quality but outdoor hardcourt conditions still heavily favour the German.
Leave this match out of an accumulator given Zverev’s delicate condition right now but consider a one-off on Varillas to win at least a set, perhaps the first, before Zverev finds some rhythm.
