THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Jozef Kovalik set a career-high ATP world ranking of 80th back in 2018 but the Slovak has been out in the wilderness for much of the past few seasons. A victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Bastad Open last week was hugely encouraging and he came very close to making the quarter-finals there in a three-set defeat to Filip Misolic but he came through qualifying as a lucky loser this week before an impressive straight-sets victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild. World number 18 Lorenzo Musetti beat Elias Ymer, who had beaten Kovalik in qualifying, in straight sets on Tuesday to look the overwhelming favourite here and the Italian will be desperate to stamp some authority in Hamburg as the reigning champion. Musetti’s victory over Carlos Alcaraz here last summer was the 21-year-old’s greatest day on tour but he should struggle to keep his crown with the likes of Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev in the draw. Back the Italian to make the quarter-finals in straight sets.
