World number 106 Thiago Monteiro grabbed another brilliant upset on his favoured clay on Wednesday, stunning former number six Gael Monfils to back-up an incredible result over Stefanos Tsitsipas at this stage of the Madrid Open. It took an inspired Jiri Lehecka to beat the Brazilian in the third round at Madrid and an excellent straight-sets win over Corentin Moutet in qualifying earlier this week suggests he has found some of the best tennis of his career out of nowhere.
World number 35 Jordan Thompson brings a two-match losing streak on clay into Rome but he did lift the Madrid Open doubles title alongside Sebastian Korda last weekend for some solid momentum.
