THE PREDICTION
World number 42 meets number 43 here as John Isner takes on Adrian Mannarino for the 10th time on tour. The reading is grim for 34-year-old Mannarino, who trails Isner 8-1 in their head-to-head record with a solitary win taken via an injury to Isner in the third game of their second round match at Wimbledon way back in 2013. However, 37-year-old Isner lost his first match of the season to a Frenchman when Gregoire Barrere came back from a set down on Monday at the Auckland Classic and he cannot claim his oft-awarded ‘evergreen’ title forever. Mannarino conceded just one game to Federico Coria in his opening United Cup match but he capitulated poorly against Croatia’s Borna Gojo from a set up before an early exit to J.J. Wolf this week in Auckland. It is pretty difficult to back either player on form, then, but fairly straightforward based on history. Isner’s hammer-serve takes very little warming up and he made 28 aces against Barrere on Monday to suggest his main weapon is ready to go.
Back Isner to edge this match outright but, considering both players’ poor recent form, this match is probably left out of an accumulator.
