World number 82 Joao Sousa has enjoyed a huge spot of luck this week in Auckland to essentially receive a bye to the round of 16 as a lucky loser, replacing Francisco Cerundolo. The 33-year-old found a rare run of solid form last year to win his fourth ATP title at the Pune Open and he beat Gasquet in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open before losing in the final to Casper Ruud. Former world number seven Gasquet gained revenge, though, to claim a five-set thriller in the first round of Wimbledon in one of several impressive turns at Grand Slams last year. Gasquet beat Kiranpal Pannu in straight sets in the first round but Sousa will be a much tougher ask with this huge second chance boosting him. The Portuguese won their clay meeting and Gasquet their clash on grass, making this first hardcourt encounter a tricky call. Back the Frenchman to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
