Current world number 123 Jiri Vesely has jumped almost 50 places up the ATP world rankings this week in what has been a stunning run out of nowhere to the Dubai Tennis Championships. The tall, powerful Czech has two ATP 250 titles to his name from the Auckland Open in 2015 and Pune back in 2020 but this is the first ATP 500 final of his career and he has fought tooth and nail to be here. The stand-out scalp is of course outgoing world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, but a three-set comeback victory over Denis Shapovalov on Friday complements superb wins over Marin Cilic and Roberto Bautista Agut this week in who’s who of title contenders.
World number seven Andrey Rublev has come back from a set down in three-successive matches in Dubai, beating Hubert Hurkacz in a tense semi-final on Friday. The 24-year-old has an incredible record at ATP 500 level, with four to his name already, and he takes an impressive eight-match winning streak into the final after winning his first title of the season in Marseille last weekend.
This first meeting between Jiri Vesely and Andrey Rublev should be a passionate, exciting tussle between Rublev’s clear superior ability and Vesely’s sudden, sheer will. The 28-year-old looked resigned to spend the rest of his career on the Challenger circuit but he has proven himself worthy of finals like this and that momentum is a huge force for Rublev to have to challenge.
