World number 37 Jil Teichmann was shocked in the first round of Indian Wells by Danka Kovinic last time out but recent wins over Elina Svitolina and Elise Mertens on a run to the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships suggest it was just a bad day. The 24-year-old Swiss is at her best on the clay but a brilliant run to the Cincinnati Masters final last summer needed Ash Barty to stop to show just what she is capable of. World number 50 Alison Riske has every chance of coming through this quality first rounder too, though, with a shock victory over Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells fresh in the memory. The 31-year-old won her most recent of three WTA titles at the Linz Open late last year and she finished runner-up to Madison keys at Adelaide 2 back in January. An in-form Teichmann won their first meeting in three sets at last season’s Ostrava Open but at this moment in time taking Riske to win at least one yet again looks the most sensible approach.
