28-year-old Jessica Pegula set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th last month after a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Ash Barty. Currently ranked at world number 21, the American was shocked in the second round of Indian Wells by Marie Bouzkova two weeks ago in keeping with a downturn in intensity. Pegula won the only WTA title of her career to date at the 2019 Washington Open.
SLOANE STEPHENS
World number 38 Sloane Stephens beat Panna Udvardy in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round of the Miami Open. The 29-year-old won her only Masters title here in 2018, just a few months after winning the US Open in 2017. Stephens won the seventh WTA title of her career, and a first since Miami, at last month’s Guadalajara Open.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a really exciting tussle between two players deserving of a deep run at the Miami Open. Jessica Pegula beat Sloane Stephens in straight sets at last year’s Indian Wells in their only previous encounter but Stephens has been in better recent form after her title in Guadalajara and she will be well-backed as the Floridian native. Three sets seems likely, especially when battling Pegula is in involved, so back Stephens to win at least one of them even if she ends up losing.
