World number three Jessica Pegula and number 27 Martina Trevisan were the deciding factors of their nations’ respective semi-final wins on Saturday and this will be a fascinating opening clash in the United Cup final. 28-year-old Pegula stunned world number one Iga Swiatek to end a run of four defeats to the Pole to get the USA in the mood for an incredible 5-0 victory over Poland, but Trevisan’s three-set victory over world number six Maria Sakkari was the most surprising result of the round as the Italian is so often found wanting away from her favoured clay. Pegula now shares a 4-2 head-to-head record with Swiatek and, perhaps notably, Pegula and Swiatek have gone on to win the tournament in which they beat the other on all five previous occasions.
