World number 21 Jessica Pegula put in a great performance to beat in-form Elena Rybakina in straight sets on Saturday, backing up a strong victory over Sloane Stephens. The 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a second-successive season back in January before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty, beating Anhelina Kalinina in the first round of that campaign.
ANHELINA KALININA
25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 41st after coming back from a set down to beat Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the third round of the Miami Open. The Ukrainian also came back from a set down to shock Madison Keys in the second round last Friday, in keeping with recent strong form that saw her take a set from eventual Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek before defeat two weeks ago.
THE PREDICTION
Despite Jessica Pegula’s excellent form at the Miami Open this match-up with Anhelina Kalinina still looks a tricky one. The pair shared a very tight match in the first round of the Australian Open in January and Kalinina has already shocked Madison Keys this campaign, with each of her three matches seeing a decider so far. Pegula should be coming through this once again but it would be a suitably cautious concession to take the American to win at least a set inside an accumulator. Otherwise, Pegula in three sets looks a potentially valuable one-off here.
