21-year-old Jenson Brooksby will set a career-high ATP world ranking of at least 41st after a stunning dismissal of 25th-seed Karen Khachanov on Saturday. The American is one of the most exciting young players on tour and clearly a future top 10 player at the least, with just eight games conceded over two matches so far at Indian Wells. World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas was part of a mammoth three-set battle with Jack Sock on Saturday, ultimately coming through a seceding tiebreak unscathed. The 23-year-old failed to convert five break points on Sock’s huge serve but showed his world-class grit in both tiebreaks that took him to a second-successive Australian Open semi-final in January. Tsitsipas won the Monte-Carlo Open last season for a first Masters title and he came agonisingly close to a first Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros as Novak Djokovic fought back from two sets down in Paris.
THE PREDICTION
There is more than just the scent of an upset about this blockbuster clash between exciting young Jenson Brooksby and world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is still not his very best self on court. Brooksby has taken Alexander Zverev to the limit twice in recent months, both in the second round here last October and in the latest-finishing tennis match ever at the Mexican Open last month, and three sets seems a distinct possibility here. The American will be backed to the hilt as a showman with the promising potential to back it up and Tsitsipas does not often react well to playing the villain.
