THE PREDICTION

World number 25 Diego Schwartzman endured a fairly ropey 2022 season after looking so strong at the end of 2021 and it will be fascinating to see how the Argentine fares this year. After dropping out of the United Cup two weeks ago the 30-year-old will play his first match of 2023 here, having received a bye to the round of 16 as third seed, in a tough fixture with Jenson Brooksby. 22-year-old Brooksby came back from a set down to beat Fabio Fognini in a fiery opener in Auckland and the American’s coming season will also be interesting after a middling 2022 of his own. Brooksby lost comfortably to Schwartzman in late 2021 but he looks capable of levelling things here with a match in his legs and Schwartzman’s last coming in October. Back Brooksby to win outright but leave this match out of an accumulator.
