Former world number five Jelena Ostapenko found some serious form on last season’s early hardcourt swing before a significant downturn after the summer. The 2018 Roland-Garros champion is brilliant across all surfaces but possibly at her best on the grass these days and faster surfaces in general with her blistering game. World number 34 Irina Camelia-Begu claimed the fifth WTA title of her career last summer at the Palermo Ladies Open but she had not played since September until Monday through injury, impressively coming back from a set down to beat Shelby Rogers. World number 18 Ostapenko conceded just four games to Karolina Pliskova but it is hard to quantify that result at this moment in time with the Czech in another rut of poor form. Begu leads their head-to-head record 2-1 but Ostapenko claimed their most recent contest in three sets at last season’s Wimbledon. Notably, though, Begu has earned at least a set in all three of their encounters so follow that alternative or risk Ostapenko to win outright.
