THE PREDICTION

World number three Jannik Sinner obliterated the defending Miami Open champion, Daniil Medvedev, to the tune of just three games conceded on Friday to return to the final that he lost against the Russian last season. The 22-year-old has now won each of his last five matches against Medvedev, who had beaten him twice in finals early last season both here and in Rotterdam, to mark his incredible evolution on tour and he looks ready to lift this title for the first time after twice finishing runner-up – doing so against Hubert Hurkacz in 2021.

32-year-old Grigor Dimitrov is the surprise finalist after two scintillating wins over Carlos Alcaraz, the recent Indian Wells champion, and world number five Alexander Zverev, who had led their head-to-head 7-1. The Bulgarian is playing perhaps the best, if not most consistent, tennis of his life right now and he will move back inside the top 10 for the first time since 2018 after setting a career-high of third with his ATP Finals win the previous year. Dimitrov has beaten three top 10 players in the same tournament for the first time since that career campaign at the ATP Finals in London but this should prove one step too far against Sinner’s simply imperious level.

The Italian looks likely to become world number one for the first time this season and he is certainly playing like the best in the world so far, although Dimitrov took a set from him in their Beijing clash last October. Sinner leads their head0to-head 2-1 but two wins last season suggest he can extend that record here. Back the Italian to win outright, with straight sets just about likelier than three.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
