World number 11 Jannik Sinner was the consummate professional in a tough round of 16 clash with Nick Kyrgios on Tuesday, overcoming a first-set tiebreak to take the match in two. The 20-year-old finished runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz here last season but since then he has won three of his total five ATP titles. The Italian just missed out on ATP Finals qualification last November but he almost beat Daniil Medvedev there as Matteo Berrettini’s replacement.
FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO
23-year-old came back from a set down to shock Frances Tiafoe late on Tuesday night, backing up a hugely impressive set of results against Tallon Griekspoor, Reilly Opelka and Gael Monfils. The Argentine will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 72nd after his best two weeks on tour, with his previous a run to the final of last season’s Buenos Aires Open.
THE PREDICTION
Francisco Cerundolo has played exceptionally this week as the underdog in every single one of his now four wins at the Miami Open and it feels unfair to count him out once again. The Argentine’s sudden form on hardcourts is a huge surprise given his so far underwhelming performances off his favoured clay but it is confidence he can take straight onto the clay swing next month with promise. Cerundolo’s campaign makes backing Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets a nervy call here but it remains, realistically, the reasonable one. Taking the level-headed Italian to come through outright is perhaps an understandable compromise, though.
