World number 10 Jannik Sinner got his Indian Wells campaign underway with a solid victory over Laslo Djere on Saturday. The Italian won four ATP titles last season, the most prestigious of which came at the ATP 500 Washington Open, but he also finished runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz at the Miami Open for a best Masters result to date.
BENJAMIN BONZI
25-year-old Benjamin Bonzi is in the form of his career right now, with a straight-sets victory over 21st seed Lorenzo Sonego on Saturday backing up a solid win over Arthur Rinderknech in the first round. Bonzi recently stunned Aslan Karatsev at the Open 13 in Marseille for a career-best ranking win and he took eventual champion Andrey Rublev to three sets before losing in the semi-finals.
THE PREDICTION
Benjamin Bonzi had won just one Masters-level match before this campaign but the Frenchman must not be underestimated in this current vein of rich form. World number 10 Jannik Sinner has one of the coolest heads around, though, and he is likely to be able to quash Bonzi’s momentum after what could be a tight set that could go either way. Sinner beat Bonzi in straight sets at Roland-Garros in 2020 in their only previous meeting but backing him as outright winner here looks a suitably cautious move.
