THE PREDICTION

Current US Open champion Iga Swiatek beat the former champion Emma Raducanu in straight sets on Tuesday but it was more of a battle than the 6-3, 6-1 scoreline makes out. The fact that 21-year-old Swiatek so masterfully weathered an early onslaught by Raducanu to come through comfortably in the end is testament to just how ruthless she is at her best and it should worry the rest of the draw at Indian Wells as she looks in much better shape than her run to the Dubai final last month. World number 83 Sorana Cirstea is much better than her current ranking suggests and she overcame Caroline Garcia in three sets on Tuesday to provide one of the bigger upsets of the tournament so far. The Romanian took a set from Swiatek before defeat in their only previous encounter in the round of 16 at the Australian Open last season but despite her efforts this fortnight it would be a surprise to see anything other than another straight-sets result here for the defending champion.
