THE LOWDOWN
World number one Iga Swiatek became the dominant force on the WTA tour almost immediately after Ash Barty’s retirement after the Australian Open last season. The 21-year-old reached the semi-finals here last season before losing to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins but soon after that she embarked on a 37-match winning streak that included six WTA titles, including a second Roland-Garros trophy and four Masters crowns. Swiatek came back from a blip over the grass season to end the year as strongly as she started it with a huge run to a first US Open title, her third major title overall.
THE PREDICTION
This is no gimme, though, against world number 68 Jule Niemeier as the German was one of only two players to take a set from Swiatek at the US Open in their first meeting in the round of 16. 23-year-old Niemeier looks a serious future prospect after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on her debut, and only her second Grand Slam, but she failed to qualify for Adelaide 2 this week in an admittedly crazy high-level draw. Swiatek’s last match was a defeat to Jessica Pegula at the United Cup that will have hurt the Pole but she should be the better for it here. Swiatek in straight sets is a slight risk where Niemeier is concerned but probably still the right call here.
