THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number four Iga Swiatek was forced to come back from a set down against a spirited Anhelina Kalinina on Friday, although she conceded just one game after dropping the first set. The 20-year-old is riding a six-match winning streak after winning her second Masters title, and fourth WTA title overall, at the Qatar Open last month. Swiatek burst onto the scene in 2020 as a teenage Grand Slam champion at Roland-Garros and she almost reached a second major final this season as she exited in the semi-finals to Danielle Collins.

CLARA TAUSON

19-year-old Clara Tauson set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd after a run to the third round of the Australian Open was ended by eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. The Dane has all the hallmarks of a future world number one, with recent defeats over red-hot Anett Kontaveit in Melbourne and Belinda Bencic at the Qatar Masters putting her working level at around the top 20 mark. Tauson won two WTA titles last season at the Lyon Open and Luxembourg Open.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a thriller between two young players destined to enjoy a big rivalry over the next decade at the top of the sport. World number four Iga Swiatek won the only previous meeting between the two back in 2019 in a Fed Cup qualifier and she remains the favourite to come through three years on between this battle of future world number ones. Clara Tauson has already beaten in-form Anett Kontaveit this season, which over the last few months has tended to see a player win a title, but a comprehensive defeat by Paula Badosa at this stage of the Qatar Masters suggests she still lacks the ruthless consistency that Swiatek has displayed several times over already. The Dane should break the top 20 this season, of not brush up against the top 10 come the end of it, but at this moment in time Swiatek can be backed the outright winner here.
