20-year-old Iga Swiatek will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of third after overcoming a tough test against Clara Tauson on Sunday to reach the round of 16. The Pole has twice had to fight back from a set down but then blasted through the sets that count so far this campaign and she will need to tighten up from the off moving forward. Swiatek won the second Masters title of her career last time out at the upgraded Qatar Open, with the Roland-Garros title in 2020 her crowning achievement.
ANGELIQUE KERBER
Former world number one Angelique Kerber conceded just three games to Daria Kasatkina on Sunday in a clear exertion of several months’ worth of frustration. The current world number 16 contracted covid-19 right at the eve of the new season to set her preparations well back but she looks set to enjoy another strong year on tour after last year’s resurgent form. The three-time Grand Slam champion lost to eventual champion Ash Barty in the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer, not long after winning her first WTA title in three years at the Bad Homburg Open.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling contest between Iga Swiatek’s all-out assault and Angelique Kerber’s world class defensive skills but with the German not quite up to speed yet we shall have to hope for a rematch one day soon. Swiatek is riding a seven-match winning streak from the Qatar Open and she has reached at least the semi-finals of three of her four tournaments this season including the Australian Open. Kerber will be a big test of her credentials but the Pole can be backed to pass them with an outright win from a match likely to see three sets.
