THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Hubert Hurkacz put in one of his better performances in the past 12 months to oust fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16, backing-up an excellent comeback over defending champion Borna Coric. The 26-year-old won the Miami Open in 2021 and finished runner-up at the Canada Masters last summer to bring some serious pedigree into Cincinnati but his form this season has been lacking, more mentally than physically. 24-year-old Alexei Popyrin looks set to break the top 40 on tour for the first time after overcoming Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets on Thursday. The Aussie came through qualifying as a lucky loser in his first campaign since claiming a second ATP title at the Umag Open last month and all four of his matches since the start of qualifying have seen three sets. Two big servers make tiebreaks a distinct possibility here and that offers a useful combination of Hurkacz to win at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match. The Pole leads their head-to-head 2-0 but Popyrin should be in better form than their previous encounters.
