World number 20 Elina Svitolina has struggled to get any rhythm across the seven tournaments she has entered this season, with a three-set defeat to Harriet Dart last time out at Indian Wells the second loss to a player ranked outside the top 100 in 2022. The 27-year-old won last season’s Chicago Women’s Open for a 16th career title, with 2018’s Italian Open the most recent of her three Masters titles. Svitolina also won the WTA Finals in 2018, a year after setting a career-high WTA world ranking of third.
THE PREDICTION
There is more than a scent of an upset about this second tie between an out-of-sorts Elina Svitolina and Heather Watson. Svitolina has admitted to struggling with tour life this season with the horror of war in her homeland, Ukraine, and understandably so.
