25-year-old Harriet Dart will break the top 100 on the WTA tour for a first time after an excellent straight-sets victory over Kaia Kanepi. The current world number 120 qualified well last week but no one expected this run to the round of 16, especially via a career-best comeback win over 12th seed Elina Svitolina in the second round.
MADISON KEYS
World number 29 Madison Keys beat fellow American Alison Riske in straight sets on Sunday in keeping with her superb 2022 form. The 27-year-old won the sixth title of her career, and a first since the Cincinnati Masters in 2019, at Adelaide 2 back in January (once again beating Riske in the final) before an incredible run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was halted by eventual champion Ash Barty. Other than her Cincinnati trophy, Keys has twice been a runner-up at Masters level at the Italian Open and Canadian Open in 2016.
THE PREDICTION
Harriet Dart is clearly in the form of her career this season and especially at Indian Wells, with her run to the round of 16 nothing to do with a lucky draw. The 25-year-old played exceptionally well to beat former world number three Elina Svitolina in the second round but actually more impressively to oust in-form Kaia Kanepi in two sets after the Estonian recently reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. Madison Keys’ current working level, and all her experience, does keep her the solid favourite to win through here but Dart has played well enough to take the American to win outright here. There is the chance of a set for Dart, which would be valuable, but Keys can become ruthless once she gathers some wins in a row.
