THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov moved back up to 13th after finally breaking his title drought with victory at the Brisbane International. The 32-year-old has found a new lease of life under new coach Jamie Delgado, with a stunning surge of form late last season seeing him win more matches than any other ATP player after the US Open. A first ATP title since his most prestigious, the ATP Finals in 2017, should see Dimitrov bring a far less burdened presence into the Australian Open and that makes him incredibly dangerous as a semi-finalist here in 2017 with recent results over the likes of Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas suggesting he could finally reach a Grand Slam final with the right draw.
This is a tough opener, though, against seasoned battler Marton Fucsovics. The 31-year-old can be much better than his current ranking of 70th suggests, with victories over the likes of Sebastian Korda and Felix Auger-Aliassime last season proving he can cause an upset here. The Hungarian leads their head-to-head 2-1 and all three of their encounters have seen sets go both ways, including a five-set thriller in favour of Fucsovics at the US Open in 2020. Back Dimitrov to win outright, with four sets about as likely as three.
