THE LOWDOWN

GAEL MONFILS

35-year-old Gael Monfils has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the second time in his career after a tight straight-sets victory over Miomir Kecmanovic. The world number 20 has been in scintillating form, improving on the level that saw him win an 11th career ATP title at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago, although Matteo Berrettini will be his first top 10 test in Melbourne. Monfils can match his best Grand Slam showing with one more win after he exited and Roland-Garros in 2008 and the US Open in 2016 at the semi-finals stage.

MATTEO BERRETTINI

World number seven Matteo Berrettini has improved with each passing round at the Australian Open and he made the quarter-finals here for a first time after knocking out Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets. The 25-year-old won a first ATP 500 event at Queen’s Club on grass last season and he took that form all the way to the Wimbledon final before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. The Italian also made the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

THE PREDICTION

Despite Gael Monfils’ incredible campaign so far in Melbourne it is starting to be of concern that the Frenchman is yet to drop a set. The further he goes without doing so the harder he may fall if he goes behind but it is hard not to get fully behind the showman when he is enjoying himself like this. A first top 10 opponent is going to be the litmus test for his chances at what would be a very unlikely but very popular first Grand Slam title on Sunday as he takes on Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini for a third time. Berrettini has won both of their previous meetings, with their first a five-set thriller at this stage of the US Open back in 2019 and the second this time last year in straight sets at the ATP Cup. The Italian is a pretty fair favourite to come through but taking Berrettini to win at least two sets and Monfils to win at least one is an interesting, perhaps sentimental, alternative to fully siding with a winner.
