THE LOWDOWN

GAEL MONFILS

In-form world number 20 Gael Monfils conceded just five games to Federico Coria in the first round of the Australian Open. The Frenchman won the Adelaide International at the start of the year for an 11th career ATP tour title and he looks in excellent form in his 17th campaign here in Melbourne. The 35-year-old reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2009 and the US Open in 2016 but a quarter-final here in 2016 is his benchmark to beat this campaign.

ALEXANDER BUBLIK

24-year-old Alexander Bublik hit 30 aces and 11 double faults to beat Ernesto Escobedo in four sets on Monday. The maverick Kazakh does not believe in second serves and that tends to get him past the lower-ranked opponents without too much trouble. The world number 37 finished runner-up for a fourth time on tour at the Singapore Open last season, although an unfortunate injury saw him pull out of the Antalya Open final at the start of 2021.

THE PREDICTION

Prepare for anything in this second round match between Gael Monfils and Alexander Bublik with both men putting entertainment ahead of results on court. Bublik, the most unpredictable man on tour, was the winner of their only previous meeting over four sets at Roland-Garros back in 2020 but the boisterous atmosphere is likely to boost Monfils here unlike the muted conditions of Paris two years ago. In-form Monfils should be the man to reach the third round here come the end of it but how he does so counts almost completely on what mood Bublik is in here, with the Kazakh well capable of bombing in three, forcing four sets, five sets, serving 40 aces or 40 double faults. A tiebreak is quite likely here, as is Monfils taking at least two sets, so combine the two and leave the winner up to chance.
