FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO
23-year-old Francisco Cerundolo grabbed a career-best ranking win on Sunday with a shock straight-sets victory over Gael Monfils. The Argentine finished runner-up to Diego Schwartzman at last season’s Buenos Aires Open but he has since struggled to emulate that form on his favoured clay, let alone on a hardcourt.
FRANCES TIAFOE
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe will at least reach his career-high ATP world ranking of 29th first set three years ago after an incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after a straight-sets victory over Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The American won his only title to date in Florida at the Delray Beach Open the season before and he has reached at least the round of 16 in Miami in four successive appearances. Tiafoe’s best showing at Masters level was a quarter-final exit to Denis Shapovalov here in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Frances Tiafoe has already beaten the younger Cerundolo brother in straight sets and he should be able to back that up against Francisco at a tournament where he has consistently performed. The 24-year-old found some excellent form late last season and after a slow start to 2022 he looks ready to make gains towards the top 20 this year. Francisco Cerundolo must not be underestimated after his shock win over Gael Monfils but this is in many ways a tougher test against a home hopeful who will be backed to the hilt by a partisan crowd.
