THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo looks to be turning a corner after a sorry start to 2024, snapping a three-match losing streak in the first round of the Rio Open before a much more assured blast past Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Wednesday. The 25-year-old could end up the benefactor of what has been a mad couple of days here in Rio, with just three seeds remaining in the draw to offer a huge opportunity. World number 58 Dusan Lajovic can fluctuate wildly on tour but the Serb is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests, especially on clay, with last season’s run to the Banja Luka Open title seeing heroic wins over Novak Djokovic and Andrey Rublev. The 33-year-old beat compatriot and former champion Laslo Djere in straight sets on Thursday to build on a solid comeback over Daniel Elahi Galan on Tuesday and he stunned Cerundolo in straight sets at the Cincinnati Open last summer when the Argentine was in much better shape.
South American home-from-home advantage could tell here but Brazilian crowds will be desperate to see another seed fall with starlet Joao Fonseca still in the draw and that could see more support for Lajovic. Given their previous clash, take Lajovic to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: DUSAN LAJOVIC TO WIN A SET
