THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Frances Tiafoe will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 28th after coming back from a set down to beat Pablo Cuevas on Thursday. The American came back into the kind of form we expect late last season with a run to the Vienna Open final, where he finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev. Tiafoe is at his best against the best in blockbuster matches such as these but he trails 0-2 in a head-to-head with compatriot John Isner. The 36-year-old came back from a set down to beat in-form Steve Johnson on Thursday night in Houston but both of his wins in this match-up came on hardcourts against a teenage Tiafoe at the US Open in 2016 and the Cincinnati Open a year later. On a clay surface that limits his powerful serve a little and under the lights that Tiafoe enjoys so much it seems right to back the younger American to win outright here. As with all of Isner’s matches, you could throw in at least a tiebreak for good luck.
