World number 19 Frances Tiafoe and number 27 Dan Evans deserve a proper showdown here as two of the more natural performers on the ATP tour but Evans will be lucky to have a 2-1 scoreline to defend against the highest-ranked team, individually, at the United Cup. 24-year-old Tiafoe has won each of his three matches so far in Sydney in singles and one doubles match alongside Jessica Pegula whilst Evans lost his opener to Australia’s Jason Kubler before reacting well in a three-set victory over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Tiafoe leads their head-to-head record 3-2 after claiming the two most recent meetings in 2021 but three of their five matches went to three sets and Evans has taken at least one in each of their last three. Much of this match, including who takes part, relies on the tie still being live and so it is worth holding off here until the conclusion of the third rubber. However, the suitably cautious move if there is something to fight for here is backing Frances Tiafoe to earn at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance.
