THE LOWDOWN
19-year-old Holger Rune looked a rising star at the start of last season, particularly on his favoured clay, but few would have predicted the Dane would go on to enjoy 2022 so exuberantly. Rune claimed his first ATP title on clay at the Munich Open in form that saw him stun Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before a quarter-final exit there but it was his later hardcourt prowess that truly surprised the tennis world. The Dane set a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th at the end of the season after reaching four-consecutive finals in his last four tournaments, winning two of them at the Stockholm Open and, remarkably, at the Paris Masters with a three-set comeback over Novak Djokovic.
THE PREDICTION
Holger Rune beat five top 10 players in a row in Paris: Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic. In doing so, the Dane fast-tracked his career by a year or two but that could also make for a difficult 2023, particularly early-on, with all that added pressure, money and fame that comes with it. The 19-year-old is arguably quite a ‘young’ character on court and there is room over five sets to weather his storms and frustrate the Dane into making mistakes. World number 56 Filip Krajinovic can be a wily and difficult player on his day with notable wins over turbulent young players like Andrey Rublev and Jenson Brooksby last year making this look one of the best matches to catch in the first round. Rune lost his first match of 2023 from a set up to Yoshihito Nishioka at Adelaide 1 and whilst the Dane is still the clear favourite to win here there is more than a scent of an upset. Leave this match out of an accumulator but consider taking Krajinovic to earn at least a set, perhaps even two, as a one-off.
