THE LOWDOWN
20-year-old Emma Raducanu will always have the added pressure of her miraculous run to the 2021 US Open title as a qualifier on her back but the Brit’s main worry coming into the Australian Open is her latest injury. The former world number 10 had spent much of late last season and the winter break building up fitness after an injury-plagued 2022 only for a rolled-ankle seeing her drop out of the round of 16 at the Auckland Classic last week. A win in three sets over fellow youngster Linda Fruhvirtova before that was an encouraging one, though, and if the current world number 75 takes to court here she stands a reasonable chance at making the second round just as she did in Melbourne last season. 27-year-old Tamara Korpatsch is up to a career-high WTA ranking just ahead of Raducanu at 74th but the German failed to qualify for her first two tournaments this season in Adelaide and Hobart.
THE PREDICTION
Raducanu beat Korpatsch in three sets at the Stuttgart Open last season, one of her few tournaments unaffected by injury, and if she were fit and firing she could be backed to take this rematch a little easier on a hardcourt. As it is, however, leave this match well alone as we wait and see the extent of Raducanu’s injury.
