EMMA RADUCANU
11th seed Emma Raducanu won the first Masters-level match of her career on Friday, beating former world number four Caroline Garcia in three sets. The 19-year-old’s trajectory is a total rollercoaster, with this only her second ever Masters tournament on tour despite the fact that she is already a Grand Slam champion after becoming the first qualifier to win the US Open last season. Raducanu also reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon as an unknown wildcard last summer, where the story began.
PETRA MARTIC
Former world number 14 Petra Martic beat world number 22 Tamara Zidansek on Friday for a hugely encouraging return to the kind of form she is capable of. The Czech reached the semi-finals of the Rome Masters last May before losing in three sets to the defending champion Karolina Pliskova and she has struggled for consistency ever since. Martic won the Istanbul Open on her favoured clay in 2019, the same season she reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros.
THE PREDICTION
After the euphoria of winning her first Masters match on Friday against a player in some strong recent form in Caroline Garcia, Emma Raducanu should walk onto court on Sunday with much more confidence. The 19-year-old will be well-backed here by an adoring crowd but Petra Martic is no pushover once she gets some wins together and this will be a tough test. Raducanu’s returning was world-class at the US Open last September and if she can find that level against the tall Czech this match could be over pretty quickly. Martic would be the slight favourite on the clay, a surface which remarkably, we have yet to even see Raducanu play on as she embarks on her first full season on tour. However, back Raducanu to come through the outright winner here.
