World number 145 Emilio Gomez beat Peter Gojowczyk in three sets to qualify for the main draw at the Miami Open for a first time. The Ecuadorian reached the second round of Indian Wells last October before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta and this is a huge opportunity for him to emulate that best showing at this level. World number 97 Yoshihito Nishioka has struggled for consistent form for some time, with a recent win over Taylor Fritz at the Mexican Open as good as losses to Thiago Monteiro and Radu Albot are below par for the tricky left-hander. Nishioka qualified well this week but is is likelier that the conditions suit the more powerful Gomez. Backing Gomez to win at least a set looks the sensible option here.
