THE PREDICTION
Two-time Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev had to come back from a set down to qualifier Terence Atmane on Monday but he was never really in great danger. The 27-year-old was arguably the form player on tour in the first half of last season, winning three titles on the spin after a shock third round exit to Sebastian Korda here and then claiming two more Masters titles in Miami and Rome – the latter becoming his 20th ATP title and first on clay. After a strong summer fatigue began to creep in for Medvedev, who was well-beaten by Novak Djokovic in the US Open final, and he has looked to rectify that coming into Melbourne without playing a warm-up event.
World number 53 Emil Ruusuvuori should put up a creditable challenge of that decision in this third meeting between the two after he also came back from a set down to beat wildcard Patrick Kypson on Monday. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev at the Hong Kong Open two weeks ago to bring some bullish form into Melbourne but Medvedev frankly possesses stronger versions of most of the Finn’s weapons. Medvedev leads their head-to-head 2-0 having never dropped a set to Ruusuvuori, including en-route to that win in Rome last May, but back him to win outright here for caution’s sake.
