The 26-year-old has reached the round of 16 in her last two appearances here and the semi-finals on her debut back in 2018, which remains her best Grand Slam result to date. Mertens will begin the defence of her Women’s Doubles title won last year (w/ Sabalenka) alongside Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday too.
IRINA-CAMELIA BEGU
World number 64 Irina-Camelia Begu came back from a set down to beat Oceane Dodin on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2019. The 31-year-old won the most recent of her total four WTA titles at the Bucharest Open back in 2017, although she reached a first final since then at last year’s Cleveland Championships before finishing runner-up to Anett Kontaveit.
THE PREDICTION
This looks a good candidate for three sets between consummate professional Elise Mertens and in-form Irina-Camelia Begu. Both of their previous meetings have gone the way of the Belgian but a three-set clash at the 2017 Fed Cup on a hard court looks a decent benchmark for what may transpire.
