ELENA RYBAKINA
World number 20 Elena Rybakina is yet to drop a set at Indian Wells after a solid display against an out-of-sorts Victoria Azarenka on Monday. The 22-year-old started the season in excellent form and set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty in Adelaide but she has since struggled to find both consistent form and fitness. Rybakina’s most recent of two WTA titles came at the Hobart International in 2020.
VIKTORIJA GOLUBIC
29-year-old Viktorija Golubic set a career-high WTA world ranking of 35th as recently as last month before she lost the ranking points from back-to-back runner-up places at the 2021 Lyon Open and Monterrey Open. The Swiss is clearly in better form than her current rank of 51st suggests after she overcame in-form Jasmine Paolini, who beat the top seed Aryna Sabalenka, in three tight sets on Monday. Golubic reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last season as well as a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in the Women’s Doubles alongside Belinda Bencic.
THE PREDICTION
Elena Rybakina was the winner of the only previous meeting with Viktorija Golubic in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Nanchang Open, where she went on to finish runner-up to Rebecca Peterson. The Kazakh looks to be in dependable shape after several retirements this season but she is still too risky to consider adding to an accumulator. Golubic consistently achieves more than she is given credit for but it is hard to see a way through this powerful youngster with a very bright future ahead. Back Rybakina to win outright here.
