THE LOWDOWN
World number five Jessica Pegula will be desperate to put in a better showing at the WTA Finals after losing all six of her matches, in singles and doubles, this time last year at Fort Worth. The 29-year-old came in a little fatigued after a huge breakthrough season on tour and she looks to have rectified that this time around by taking two weeks off following her title-winning campaign at the Korea Open. World number four Elena Rybakina has also taken an extended break since her run to the semi-finals of the Beijing Masters, where she lost for the fourth time to her apparent kryptonite in Liudmila Samsonova. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January and won her first Masters title at Indian Wells back in March, adding a second in Rome, before enduring a tough summer through illness and injury. The Kazakh is making her long-awaited WTA Finals debut despite winning Wimbledon in 2022, with ranking points controversially withheld at SW19, and she will be determined to make a statement.
THE PREDICTION
Pegula leads their head-to-head record 2-1 but Rybakina beat the American in straight sets at the Miami Open in March to claim their only meeting this year. The conditions in Cancun look set to be windy, at least early-on, and that could upset the Kazakh’s rhythm on her impeccable serve whilst simultaneously benefitting Pegula’s combative defence if she brings her best on Sunday. Pegula beat Rybakina en-route to the Guadalajara Masters title this time last year and that experience in this part of the world could be the deciding factor here. Take Pegula to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
