THE PREDICTION
This should be a tight clash between world number 37 Donna Vekic and number 44 Lesia Tsurenko, both of whom could do with some better form coming into Rome. 34-year-old Tsurenko leads their head-to-head 2-1 after a straight-sets victory at the Zhengzhou Open late last year but the Ukrainian brings a three-match losing streak into the draw following a shock exit to teenager Alex Eala in Madrid. 27-year-old Vekic has often struggled to beat Tsurenko, with her only win in their record coming via an injury in Monterrey last spring, but the Croat will be hampered away from her favoured faster surfaces as Tsurenko is the more comfortable on clay. Vekic has required some tough opposition to oust her in recent weeks but four defeats from her last six suggests confidence might be low. Back Tsurenko to win at least a set, as she did in all three of their matches last season, to leave the victor up to chance.
